  We wanted a karate experience while on our trip to Okinawa. James took us in the morning for a private lesson. It was everything we could have hoped for. He expertly navigated giving us a meaningful karate experience and a good workout all while dealing with our 4 year old boy and his very limited attention span. We even learned about the history of Karate in Okinawa during our break. Overall an amazing experience and highly recommended!

  I am a 4th Dan black belt in Shukokai karate from Melbourne, Australia, with 20 years of martial arts experience. I was lucky enough to train at Asato Dojo with Sensei James in July of 2023. It was a lifelong dream come true to practise traditional Okinawan karate in a proper dojo. Sensei James and the rest of his dojo community were extremely welcoming and kind to my wife and I. I was honoured to train with Sensei James in a 1-on-1 two-hour session, which he was very kind to offer to me. In the session we covered an amazing array of traditional training including chi ishi, makiwara, kihon, sanbon kumite, bo, eku and so much more. It was a wonderful educational experience that I will always be grateful for. One day I will return to Asato Dojo for further training.

  James is an incredibly knowledgeable instructor. Not only can you train at his dojo, he can also arraign specific sightseeing tours and act as your guide as well. On my last trip to Okinawa he arranged for a Batto-jitsu lesson with a Japanese sword master, a lesson with the only Japanese sword make on Okinawa, a trip to the Kobudo Museum and several other sights.   This is THE dojo to visit if you aspire to travel to Okinawa on a martial arts journey. Students of any age and any ability level will find value in the programs here. James Sensei is an accomplished instructor who easily sees and meets the needs of any student. The local programs include child and adult classes; the programs for international students are highly organized and very affordable.

  I visited Okinawa and was invited to train at Asato dojo with James Sensei.

I had the opportunity to train kubodo as well which was great! For a first timer with weapons, i was well looked after and made to feel at ease right away.

James and his students are fantastic martial artists and were incredibly welcoming. Thank you Asato dojo for this experience.

  I have know James-sensei for 10+ years as a karate colleague, and he is a well experienced practitioner, and enthusiastic and qualified instructor. I encourage any/all to consider training at the Asato Dojo.

  This dojo is great and I love this dojo's training methods.  The sensei is friendly, laid back with a calm presence.  He has great training equipment as well.  Tons of chi ishis, great makiwaras, a bob that has experienced tons of kihon and much more.  Highly recommended.  I was honored to be able to visit and train there.
