Discover one of the most authentic and unchanged schools of Shuri-te Karate remaining in Okinawa – join us on Sunday November 5th, 2023
Seminar description: In this one day seminar, Ulf Karlsson Sensei will introduce Tachimura no Naihanchi kata, the main principles and some applications. Originating from Bushi Tachimura, a samurai and royal guard in the latter days of the Ryukyu Monarchy, this kata is significantly different from most other Naihanchi kata practiced in Shuri-te karate systems. It employs very efficient straight line movement to cut through the stance of the opponent, breaking their posture and balance immediately and offering up various options to complete a takedown or throw. This kata forms the foundation of the Kishimoto-Di system of karate, which has a unique set of kata also including Nidanbu, Passai and Kusanku.
Principles: The principles of “issun hazureru” – “avoid by just an inch”, “kobou ittai” – make attack and defence as one mocement, and “tai gi ittai” – “Body and technique as one (timing and power)”, will be presented and explained as the underlying principles for the kata and the fighting strategy derived from it.
Study Program: This one day seminar is the opening event in our 2 month special program of Kishimoto-Di study at Asato dojo under the instruction of Ulf Karlsson sensei. Weekly classes will culminate in a 2 day seminar on December 26th and 27th with the objective of bringing participants up to a level of competency in both kata and applications of kata in the Kishimoto-di system.
