What we teach

Classes in Shorin-ryu karate, Goju-ryu karate and kobudo plus special seminars

At the Asato Dojo we teach 4 major styles of Okinawan fighting arts.
Shorinryu karate, specifically Matsubayashiryu karatedo, the school established by Nagamine Shoshin sensei.
Goju-ryu karate was created by Miyagi Chojun sensei and named for its mix of hard and soft skills.
Kobudo, practice with traditional weapons of Okinawa such as the Bo (staff), Sai (metal kosh), Nunchaku (flail) and other weapons.
Motobu-ryu Moidi – an old Okinawan samurai family art that predates modern era karate and includes both empty handed and many weapons techniques.

We welcome locals and visitors alike to join our evening classes or request special classes during the daytime.  Our instructors at Asato Dojo draw on many years of study and experience in Japan and Okinawa to teach karate and kobudo for those who are looking for the benefits of improved self defense, better self confidence, improved heath, cultural study, or just to experience a taste of Okinawan tradition.

For competition-focussed Karateka: Our Goju-ryu karate and kobudo instructor, Andrea Klementisova is an international level karate competitor holding senior rank in both disciplines as well as speaking fluent Japanese.

In addition to regular weekly classes the Asato Dojo also frequently hosts special Seminar events featuring visiting instructors from Okinawa, Japan and around the world.
